Meet Marianne
Marianne Alto has spent a career bringing people together and solving problems. With degrees in law and science and a professional background as a facilitator and a business owner, she has long been dedicated to people and community, helping people find common ground and create meaningful change.
First elected to Victoria City Council in 2010, Marianne has worked tirelessly to make Victoria a more livable, inclusive, and forward-thinking city. As Mayor, she has focused on what matters most to residents: increasing housing supply and affordability, improving community safety and wellbeing, and investing in community while strengthening partnerships across the region. She helped launch the city’s first collaboration with Island Health and frontline service providers, and introduced Victoria’s open data portal to make local government more transparent and accessible.
Marianne believes a great city is one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. That belief has guided her work on issues like climate action, public transportation, accessibility, parks and green spaces, emergency preparedness, and community infrastructure. She continues to champion policies that support local businesses, vibrant neighbourhoods, and a high quality of life for all residents.
Marianne is deeply involved in regional leadership. She serves on the Capital Regional District, where she chairs the Arts Commission and contributes to key committees focused on housing, health, and infrastructure. She also works with organizations such as the Victoria/Esquimalt Police Board, BC Transit, and the BC Urban Mayors’ Caucus, always advocating for practical solutions and strong partnerships.
Outside of City Hall, Marianne has served as a community advocate for decades, including as the past executive director of the Victoria women’s centre.
A committed community leader, Marianne has built lasting relationships with local organizations, neighbourhoods, and First Nations, including through the City Family partnership with the Songhees and Xwsepsum Nations. Her approach is rooted in respect, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future.
Marianne owns a home in Victoria’s Burnside Gorge neighbourhood and is a proud parent of two sons. When she’s not working, you’ll often find her enjoying the city she loves—supporting local restaurants, exploring arts and culture, or cheering on local sports teams.
Now seeking re-election as Mayor, Marianne Alto remains focused on building a Victoria that is inclusive, resilient, and ready for the future—for everyone who calls it home.
Marianne is a community champion that uses her experience to bring real change for Victorians.
